Moses Muhumuza

Prof. Dr. Moses Muhumuza was trained as a graduate teacher by profession specializing in Biology and Chemistry teaching subjects. He eventually advanced his career to focus on Biological Sciences. He has a Masters of Science Degree in Biology specializing in Natural Resource Management, and a PhD in Animal, Plant, and Environmental Sciences focusing on social aspects of rural communities neighboring protected areas in an African context. He also has certificates in project planning and management, project monitoring and evaluation, data analysis and various short course trainings.

His expertise stretches across a wider spectrum in both the natural and social sciences. By virtue of teaching at secondary school and university levels, he has engaged in a variety of teaching and research methodologies and accumulated experience in developing self-study materials, writing competitive research proposals and informative research reports such as Integrated Mining, Agriculture, Tourism and Environment (IMATE). He currently lectures introductory and advanced courses in Biological Sciences, Social science for Conservation, Science education, Climate Change, Community Based Tourism and Research Methods at Mountains of the Moon University. He has supervised to completion over 30 students’ research projects in sciences and liberal arts both at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Moses has developed, won and conducted various research projects as an academic on university assignments, personal interest, and as a freelance consultant. As a freelance consultant, he has undertaken research and produced technical reports in natural science, social science and anthropology. Over thirty publications emerging from research projects have been published in form of books, book chapters, monographs, scholarly journal articles, conference proceedings and technical reports.

Moses is a member of various professional bodies and organizations. He co-founded the Rwenzori Regional Tourism Cluster, and he is a promoter of Community Based Tourism through Ecohome Stays (https://www.universalecohomes.com/). He is a peer reviewer of at least 10 international academic journals. He is also co-founder of the Centre for Action and Applied Research for Development (CAARD) (U) Limited (www.caardpublishers.com) which is a publishing company and Universal Institute of Research and Innovations (www.uniri.ac.ug) which supports individuals and organizations in areas of research, monitoring and evaluation and development of online and physical institutional systems. He is also the founder of Miracles and Science Initiative that provides life skills, personal development and career guidance to the public.

His current research interests and practices are pursued through UTOPIAN Mission which is a community congregation of individuals that believe in Environmental Conservation through Environmental Science and Innovation, Environmental Entrepreneurship and economics and Environmental Spirituality and wellness.

1. Testing the feasibility of eco-homes in conserving biodiversity in communities neighboring the Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Prof. Moses Muhumuza is the advisor to the project that is aimed at testing the feasibility of Eco-homes in conserving biodiversity in communities neighboring the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. The project objectives are: 1) To compare the plant species diversity across the different categories of Eco-homes in communities neighboring the RMNP., 2) To investigate the absolute abundance of indicator animal species in different categories of Eco-homes in communities neighboring the RMNP, 3) To analyze soil biodiversity in different categories of Eco-homes in communities neighboring the RMNP and 4) To assess the income levels of households under specific categories of the Eco-homes in villages neighboring the RMNP.

 2. Green skilling for Green Jobs

Prof. Moses Muhumuza is the Coordinator of the Green skilling for Green jobs project under the Universal Institute of Research and Innovations. The project is aimed at training the youth in solar repair and maintenance so that they can create their own jobs.

3. Common knowledge building for water conservation (November 2023 to date)

Prof. Moses Muhumuza is the Principal Investigator for the project that is aimed at conducting research in the Semuliki and Mpanga Catchments for integrated water resources management. The project is funded through Joint for water and Join Effort to Save the Environment.

4. Practical and resilient data systems in Uganda’s new cities (PRaDa). An exploratory project for Fort-Portal Tourism City and Jinja City

Prof. Moses Muhumuza is the research advisor for the project on the side of Tooro Development Network. This is a partnership project implemented among Sunbird AI, Toro Dev. and UN Global Pulse. The project is funded by the Hewlett Foundation.

5. Assessment of Community Based Biodiversity Conservation interventions in Queen Elizabeth and Rwenzori Mountains National Parks, Uganda: In search of a more effective community based biodiversity conservation strategy (July 2022 to June 2022)

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was the Principal Investigator for the project that is aimed at developing and recommending a more effective community based biodiversity conservation strategy for Uganda’s protected areas using QENP and RMNP as reference sites. The project is funded by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) under the UWA research grants scheme.

6. Eradication of Dichrostachys cinerea from the Queen Elizabeth National Park: A test of techniques and methods (July 2022 to June 2023)

prof. Moses Muhumuza was the Principal Investigator for the project that is aimed at designing and field testing techniques, methods and strategies for eradicating D. cinerea from Queen Elizabeth National Park. The project is funded by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) under the UWA research grants scheme.

7. Restoration of Nyamuriro wetland as a critical and breeding habitat of the Grey crown crane (Balearica regulorum) (March – June 2022)

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was the Project leader responsible for the conceptualization of the project and thought leadership of the project. The project is intended to improve conservation of Grey Crowned Crane in the Nyamuriro Wetland through reduction of mortality and habitat degradation using a holistic community based wetland conservation approach.

8. Baseline study of urban data governance in Uganda (Funded by The Hewlett Foundation) (May 2022 – September 2023)

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was the Principal investigator for the project which was 1.5 years under Toro Development Network. The project collecteds quantitative and qualitative data by engaging stakeholders, first in tw0 case study/pilot cities of Fort Portal and Hoima, and then at national and regional levels. An intensive literature review combined with an online survey is conducted in other Eastern African countries and cities to compare with the situation in Uganda. This helped to draw informative contextual insights and draw out broader lessons-learned on data governance at the urban level for the region at large.

 9. Community based wildlife conservation and management research programme (June 2022- June 2023):

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was the principal investigator on the project that researched community based wildlife conservation model for National Parks in Uganda (Funded by the Uganda Wildlife Research and Training Institute).  The project also used the social, ecological and economic approach to address the challenges associated with wildlife conservation in the selected national parks.

 

10.      Eradication of invasive plant species (IPS) in and around uganda’s protected areas: A test of techniques and methods on Parthenium hysterophorus, Dichrostachys cinerea and Lantana camara in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Funded by the Uganda Wildlife Research and Training Institute (February 2022 to December 2023)

prof. Moses Muhumuza was the Principal investigator for the project that aimed at designing techniques, methods and strategies for eradicating Parthenium hysterophorus, Dichrostachys cinerea and Lantana camara invasive plant species from Queen Elizabeth National Park.

11.      Level of demand, utilization and socio-cultural acceptability of the cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) in Uganda. Funded by the Uganda Wildlife Research and Training Institute (December 2022 to June 2023)

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was the principal investigator of the project that aimed at addressing the conservation challenges associated with illegal hunting of the cane rat and income and livelihood of local people, a cane rat domestication and breeding programme is needed. It intended to understand the demand, utilization and socio-cultural acceptability of the cane rat in Uganda and then campaign for the domestication of the cane rat.

12.      Ecohome stay project Funded by Vrije University Brussels (VUB) and Universal Institute of Research and Innovations (UNIRI) (January 2021 December 2021)

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was the local promoter of the project whose overall goal was to promote green environment/development from the household level among communities in the Rwenzori region, Western Uganda.

13.      Community Engagement for Development project- VLIR-IUC Programme:

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was the leader of the Research for community development project (Project 1) under the VLIR-IUC Programme. The programme was an inter university cooperation between Mountains of the Moon University and Universities in Belgium.

14.      Community Engagement for Development project- VLIR-IUCProgramme:

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was the leader of the Transversal institutional strengthening project (Project 2) under the VLIR-IUC Programme. The programme was an inter university cooperation between Mountains of the Moon University and Universities in Belgium.

15.      Flemish project for water conservation

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was a researcher in the Flemish project for Water conservation in the Rwenzori region. The Project was aimed at providing local communities neighboring the Mpanga river catchment with appropriate technologies intended to facilitate proper utilization and conservation of water resources.

16.      AFROMISON project

prof. Moses Muhumuza was a researcher in the AFROMAISON international project in the Rwenzori Mountains/ Albertine Rift case study. This was an European Union funded project that aimed at developing a tool box that shall facilitated integrated natural resource management in the Rwenzori Region.

17.      Landslide intervention project

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was a team leader for the Landslide Intervention Group (LIG). The landslide intervention group is a distinguished group in the Rwenzori region by its desire and passion for environment and biodiversity conservation. The team was formed in March 2010 by members of staff of Mountains of the Moon University who were previously engaged in environmental conservation works and were concerned about the landslide phenomena that had occurred in various hilly areas of Uganda. Although the initial proposal for the formation of a landslide intervention group was conceived by a team of Mountain of the Moon University lecturers, other interested parties from within and outside the Rwenzori region have joined the team.

18.      VLRI/IUC Project

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was involved in the VLRI/ IUC project as a project researcher and coordinated the process of selecting PhD and Masters research students to be funded under the project. The project focused on Rwenzori region community empowerment for socio-economic development though sustainable use of natural resources.

19.        APPEAR Project

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was involved in the APPEAR project (2016 -2019) as the coordinator of the project and specifically responsible for the dissemination work package. The project aimed at developing a participatory and applied curriculum in Agro-ecology at Mountains of the Moon University.

20.  Peace project for the Rwenzori.

Prof. Moses Muhumuza was involved in the Peace project for the Rwenzori as a leader researcher. The project aims at identifying the underlying causes of the current conflicts in the Rwenzori region in order to propose a context based and informed peace building strategy.
