Counselling Unit

The counselling office at MMU helps to offer guidance and counselling to students, and staff. We address personal, emotional and psychological challenges that may affect our students and staff while studying or staff working at Mountains of the Moon University.

The Office of the Counsellor addresses psychological issues that affect students and staff that may affect them in living worthy and productive lives.

The office works closely with other Faculties\Schools to offer psychosocial support to the students to realize their full potential. This is done through seminars, workshops, staff meetings, among others.

The office ensures to provide counselling and guidance services to enhance academic success and further educational goals for MMU students.

Areas of Focus

The Counselling Office is committed to promoting the mental, emotional, social, and personal well-being of the university community. Our services address a wide range of concerns, including addiction, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and bereavement, eating disorders, stress management, emotional regulation (including anger and suicidal thoughts), self-esteem building, healthy relationship development, critical thinking, and the cultivation of positive virtues and essential life skills. Our goal is to provide a safe, confidential, and supportive environment where individuals can receive professional guidance tailored to their unique needs.

Our Strategies

To meet these diverse needs, the Counselling Unit delivers services through a variety of accessible and engaging approaches. These include individual and group counselling sessions, career and educational seminars, weekly staff audio podcasts, monthly mentorship sessions for both students and staff, radio programmes on MMU Radio, self-help print and online resources, virtual counselling talks, telephone and email counselling, as well as outdoor mental wellness activities such as picnics and educational tours. These strategies are designed to foster resilience, promote mental wellness, enhance personal growth, and support academic and professional success within the university community.

Note

Counselling services are available to all students, staff, and their immediate relatives in support of academic excellence, personal well-being, and workplace productivity at MMU. The Counselling Office upholds the highest standards of professional ethics, ensuring confidentiality, respect, and integrity in every client relationship. Where a conflict of interest or dual relationship exists, referral services are available through a network of qualified community counsellors who provide free support to MMU students and staff. Individuals seeking assistance are welcome to schedule an appointment or visit the Counselling Office during working hours for professional support.
