MMU Strengthens examination quality assurance through comprehensive training workshop

Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) on Wednesday, November 12th, 2025, successfully concluded a one-day training workshop aimed at enhancing quality assurance in university examination processes, bringing together academic staff, faculty deans, faculty registrars, and staff from the Academic Registrar’s office.

The workshop, jointly organized by the Office of the Academic Registrar and the Quality Assurance Unit, was held at Block C Main Hall and facilitated by Prof. Kasule George of Kyambogo University.

The training focused on critical aspects of examination management, including upholding integrity and security in examinations, internal and external moderation to ensure fairness and consistency, and effective marking and grading of student examination scripts.

In his opening remarks, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration, Assoc. Prof. Edmond Kagambe, welcomed participants and emphasized the comprehensive nature of university examination processes.

“The robust examination processes are the cornerstone of academic credibility,” Prof. Kagambe stated, reminding participants of their multifaceted roles spanning pre-exam activities such as paper preparation, setting, moderation, and typesetting, through to exam scheduling, logistics, and timetabling.

He highlighted the complexity of examination management, noting that the setting of university exams remains one of the most challenging tasks for examiners, requiring careful attention to learning outcomes alignment, validity, reliability, fairness, clarity, and practical logistics.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor candidly acknowledged challenges facing the university’s examination process management, including inefficient administration and logistics, maintaining academic integrity, technical and infrastructural issues, and inadequate staff training.

“The credibility of our degrees depends on the integrity of the examination system,” Prof. Kagambe emphasized, stressing that quality assurance plays a crucial role in upholding academic standards.

He called upon the Office of the Academic Registrar to address identified areas of improvement and urged participants to embrace modern teaching, learning, and assessment methods, including digital and online pedagogies and artificial intelligence (AI).

Prof. Kagambe underscored that maintaining examination integrity and efficiency requires collective responsibility and collaboration among all stakeholders, including the Academic Registrar’s Examination Secretariat, examination coordinators, deans, heads of departments, examiners, scouts, invigilators, and candidates.

“Efficient university examination processes contribute significantly to student success and development by ensuring fair and transparent evaluation, providing timely feedback, reducing student anxiety, and developing essential life skills,” he noted, linking effective examination processes to the university’s broader mission of producing well-rounded, disciplined, and competent graduates.

He encouraged participants to actively engage in constructive discussions, identify challenges, and propose innovative solutions that meet international standards.

In his closing remarks, Brian Manyindo, Principal Quality Assurance Officer of MMU, who represented the Academic Registrar, urged participants to implement the knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop.

The training workshop represents MMU’s continued commitment to upholding the highest standards of academic excellence and ensuring fairness, transparency, and reliability in all examination-related activities.
