Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) on Friday, 27 March 2026 convened a structured induction programme for the executives of its Staff Association, in a day-long session held at the University’ Boardroom. The exercise marked a significant step in the University’s ongoing commitment to strengthening participatory governance and professionalising staff representation.
The induction drew together incoming association leaders and distinguished resource persons to orient newly elected executives on the legal, institutional, and operational frameworks that govern staff associations in Uganda’s public and private university sector. The programme ran from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, combining plenary sessions, group discussions, and practical facilitation.
The session was formally opened with prayers and participant introductions officiated by Rev. Fr. Edward Muhumuza, before the office of the University Secretary delivered welcoming remarks on behalf of university management. Jude Kimera, President of the Uganda Martyrs University Staff Association (UMUSA), set the tone for the day by outlining the objectives and expectations for a vibrant and responsible staff association.
“A staff association that understands its legal framework and its role in institutional governance is an asset—not only to its members, but to the entire university,” Kimera noted.
The technical segments were facilitated by Nazarious Muhimbo Rukanyangira (PhD), Co-Chairperson of the Forum for Academic Staff in Public Universities (FASPU), who led participants through topics including the Legal and Institutional Framework, Governance and Association Constitution development, Strategic Planning, Communication and Advocacy, and Negotiation and Conflict Management. The afternoon extended into Financial Management and Accountability and the association’s role in University Governance.
Role of Administrative Staff in University Performance
Kimera presented on the often-underappreciated role of administrative staff in university sustainability, urging the new leadership to position the association as a proactive institutional partner rather than a reactive body.
MMU’s investment in formally inducting its Staff Association leadership reflects the University’s vision of inclusive governance, one in which staff voices are grounded in knowledge, competence, and institutional understanding.
