On behalf of the Library and Information Services (LIS) department, I warmly welcome you to the Mountains of the Moon University Library, an intellectual hub and knowledge gateway of the University.
The Library and Information Services is an academic unit in the university whose mandate is derived from the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 (as amended). The Act in Part VIII, Section 35 puts in place the position of the University Librarian who reports to the Vice Chancellor, and states that, “the University Librarian shall be responsible for development, control, management and co-ordination of all library and information services of the university”. The overall mandate of the Library and Information Services Department, therefore, involves the development, control, management and co-ordination of all library and information services of the Mountains of the Moon University.
The MMU Library at Saaka plays a fundamental role in supporting the University’s mission of teaching, learning, research, and community engagement through the provision of equitable access to quality information resources and services in both print and digital formats. The Office of the University Librarian provides strategic leadership, policy direction, and coordination of all library operations across the University.
Under this office are several key functional sections, including: Technical and Orders Section; responsible for the acquisition, cataloguing, and classification of information materials and resources to ensure efficient organization and retrieval of information; User Services Section; which manages circulation, reference, and user assistance services, facilitating a supportive and inclusive learning environment; and; E-Resources and Digitization Section; which oversees the management and coordination of electronic and digital resources, institutional repository (for intellectual out-puts) to promote open access, knowledge sharing, as well as scholarly visibility, and the integration of emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as the anti-plagiarism tool among others to enhance electronic reference and research integrity.
As the University continues to grow into a center of academic excellence and innovation, the Library visualizes progressive growth into a smart library ecosystem which fully harnesses digital transformation, user-centered design, and sustainable information management practices. We aspire to expand access to global digital knowledge platforms, strengthen research data management, and deepen partnerships with local and international information networks.
We sincerely appreciate the support of the entire university community including students, faculty, researchers, and all staff at large, whose engagement and collaboration continually shapes our services. Your feedback is invaluable in guiding our continuous improvement efforts.
We always welcome suggestions and ideas that can help us improve the LIS service delivery, to ensure inclusivity, and make the library a true home for the support of teaching, learning and innovation.
Together, we remain committed to empowering knowledge creation and lifelong learning for the advancement of our society.
Dr. Raphael Aregu, PhD (Groningen),
University Librarian
