Joint PhD Programme Shines as MMU Hosts Distinguished Scholars from Ghent University

Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) has marked another noteworthy breakthrough in its pursuit of academic excellence and global engagement with the week-long visit of Prof. Hans De Steur and Prof. Michael De Clercq from Ghent University, Belgium.

The two distinguished professors at MMU,  conducting physical lectures for students enrolled to the Joint PhD in Agroecological Sciences, a programme jointly delivered by MMU and Ghent University.

Their presence on campus has been widely celebrated by both Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and students, who view the visit as a testament to the strength and seriousness of the partnership. Baguma Brian, one of the PhD candidates, expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to learn directly from the visiting professors, noting that their physical presence accentuates the value and international stature of the programme.

To further honour the partnership and strengthen relations, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Pius Coxwell Achanga, hosted a formal dinner on the evening of Wednesday, 26th November 2025, at Mountains of the Moon Hotel. This special engagement celebrated the continued partnership between MMU and Ghent University, particularly within the Joint PhD Programme in Agroecological Sciences.

Dr. Cosmas Wachal applauded the Vice Chancellor for extending warm hospitality to the guests, describing it as a reflection of MMU’s dedication to nurturing strategic academic partnerships.

Prof. Achanga reiterated the University’s determination to elevate postgraduate training, enhance research output, and nurture international networks that benefit both students and faculty. He commended the visiting professors for their continued support and emphasized that the Joint PhD Programme remains a flagship initiative in MMU’s academic growth.

The visiting professors expressed gratitude for the University’s hospitality and echoed Ghent University’s dedication to nurturing impactful, equitable, and enduring academic cooperation.

The combined impact of the physical lectures and the dinner engagement not only highlights MMU’s commitment to global academic integration but also fortifies the University’s mission of producing internationally competent scholars capable of addressing agroecological challenges in Uganda and beyond.
