Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) and Holland Greentech (HGT) Uganda Limited have signed a 2-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will witness the cooperation of two institutions in the field of horticulture. The signing was done at the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment Sciences at Lake Saaka Campus on Friday 26th August 2022.
The MOU will be running from 1st September 2022 to 30th August 2024. The main goals of the cooperation are student training; showcase and demonstration sites; practical research and education; network and knowledge sharing, and development of new initiatives and collaboration.
The MMU Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC), Prof. Dr. John M. Kasenene and MMU Head of Department; Mr. Kabaseke Clovis signed on behalf of MMU while Holland Greentech (HGT) Managing Director, Ms. Victoria Nakyagaba signed on behalf of HGT. The cooperation will be funded by HGT and MMU.
Under student training, Ms. Victoria Nakyagaba explained that the production greenhouse and irrigation system will be used for educational purposes and also for farmer trainings; development of growing guides; the making of videos and other training materials that will be used online. Adding that the production greenhouse and irrigation system will form an opportunity for student attachments, traineeship and research of MMU students.
The DVC; Prof. Dr. John M. Kasenene thanked Holland Greentech and he said, this was the right time to put horticulture into practice and this will, in turn, make our students change agents and in the end, this will change our region and country positively.
The Mountains of the Moon University Chancellor, Prof. Edward Rugumayo, who was the Chief Guest at the event, thanked the President of the Republic of Uganda His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for appointing him as the MMU Chancellor.
Without mincing his words, Prof. Rugumayo said that by turning MMU into a Public University; the future of students and staff was secure. He called upon MMU staff and students to do research and disseminate it, use the radio and make MMU the best institution of higher learning.
Prof. Rugumayo later officially launched and toured the greenhouse construction activity. The greenhouse construction is being led by the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment Sciences and Holland Greentech.
Holland Greentech Uganda Limited is a Private limited liability Company with registered in Uganda, located in at Nakibirango Road, Muyenga, Kampala. The company offers training in combination with horticulture supplies and technology to African SMEs, and also supplies complete horticultural packages including the building of the greenhouse, water and fertilization systems, hybrid seeds, biological crop protection, training and maintenance of greenhouses. The company represents various, mainly Dutch horticulture suppliers in 12 African countries.
