MMU Empowers 30 students and 3 staff with life-Saving First Aid skills

Mountains of the Moon University has taken a significant stride in strengthening campus safety by conducting a comprehensive First Aid Course on Injury Detection, Management, and Prevention. The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Student Affairs through the University Clinic, brought together students (33) and staff (3) eager to acquire critical emergency response skills. The training started on November 4th and ended 5th 2025 at Block C.

Led by Senior Nursing Officer Turigye Gloria, the training program was designed to prepare the university community to handle medical emergencies with confidence and competence, whether on campus or in their daily lives beyond the university gates.

A matter of life and death

Speaking at the official opening of the course, Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. John M. Kasenene emphasized the vital nature of emergency preparedness in today’s world.

“Emergencies can occur anywhere, at any time,” Prof. Kasenene told participants. “Having individuals trained to respond promptly and effectively can make the difference between life and death. There is a great need for specialists who can resuscitate and manage emergencies before professional medical help arrives.”

His remarks underscored the university’s commitment to not only academic excellence but also the holistic wellbeing and safety of its community members.

Building a culture of care

The Dean of Students, Roselyn Ssali, echoed the importance of the training, linking it directly to the university’s mandate to promote student safety and welfare.

“This training is not just about learning techniques, it’s about fostering a culture of care and responsibility within our community,” Ssali noted. She urged participants to take the knowledge seriously and to be ready to act when circumstances demand it.

Hands-on learning with an expert

The course was facilitated by Lt. Dr. Chris Mbowa, a distinguished specialist in emergency management. His approach combined theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on demonstrations that gave participants real world experience in:

  • Detecting and assessing various types of injuries
  • Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Controlling bleeding and managing wounds
  • Preventing common accidents and injuries
  • Responding appropriately to different medical emergencies

The interactive nature of the sessions was particularly well received, with participants praising the opportunity to practice techniques under expert supervision.

Looking ahead

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many calling for the university to organize similar training sessions on a regular basis. The enthusiasm reflects a growing awareness of the importance of first aid skills in everyday life.

The successful completion of this course represents more than just a training exercise, it marks a meaningful enhancement of the university’s emergency response capacity. With a growing number of staff and students now equipped with life-saving skills, Mountains of the Moon University is better positioned to respond swiftly and effectively to medical emergencies, creating a safer, more health-conscious campus environment for all.

The Department of Student Affairs has indicated that based on the positive response, additional first aid training sessions may be scheduled in the coming academic year.
