MMU holds addiction awareness seminar for students

Mountains of the Moon University Counsellor, Gorret Kugonza, organized a one-day seminar on November 14th, 2025 on addiction and recovery for students at the university’s RB4 venue, aimed at equipping young people with knowledge to navigate substance abuse challenges.

The seminar, which brought together students from various faculties, featured Dr. Richard Kyazze as the main facilitator. Dr. Kyazze addressed critical issues surrounding general addiction, debunked common myths about substance abuse, and emphasized the importance of awareness and prevention.

Dr. Kyazze stressed that addiction should not be viewed solely as a moral failing but rather as a disease that requires proper management and control. He highlighted the need for increased awareness about chemical dependence, substance use, and alcoholism among the student population.

“Addiction is a disease that affects the brain and body. It’s not just about willpower or moral weakness,” Dr. Kyazze explained during his presentation.

The facilitator cautioned against downplaying alcohol use, noting its devastating consequences including traffic accidents, domestic violence, and health complications. He urged students to recognize the serious risks associated with substance abuse and to take proactive steps toward prevention.

Dr. Kyazze provided students with practical advice for maintaining their physical and mental health. He emphasized the importance of regulating alcohol consumption, protecting brain function, and caring for vital organs through healthy lifestyle choices.

His recommendations included maintaining a nutritious diet, ensuring adequate sleep, and engaging in activities that generate positive energy. These practices, he noted, are essential for academic success and overall well-being.

Speaking at the event, University Counsellor Gorret Kugonza expressed confidence that the seminar would positively impact students’ lives and help them avoid behaviors that could derail their academic pursuits.

“This activity will help our students make informed decisions in their daily lives and avoid destructive behaviors such as alcohol addiction that can lead them astray as they pursue their studies,” Kugonza said.

The counsellor emphasized the university’s ongoing commitment to providing holistic support to students, ensuring they have the knowledge and resources needed to succeed both academically and personally.

The seminar represents part of Mountains of the Moon University’s broader student welfare initiatives, addressing the growing concern of substance abuse among young people in higher education institutions across Uganda.
