Mountains of the Moon University on Monday 15th September 2025 proudly hosted the Roots Africa Symposium, a radical event that gathered together students, farmers, leaders, and stakeholders under the theme “Innovation and Community Transformation.”
Speaking as a patron of Agroecology Club at the symposium, Mr. Clovis Kabaseke emphasized the importance of the gathering in exposing students to new ideas, unlocking opportunities, and promoting international partnerships for institutions like MMU.
Professor John M Kasenene, MMU Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs and Outreaches, commended Roots Africa for equipping both students and farmers with the knowledge and skills to become agents of change in their communities. He further recognized the program’s role in advancing sustainable farming practices and agroecology, which align with MMU’s vision of community-driven development.
Roots Africa Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Cedric Nwafor, inspired participants to take ownership of their challenges, create solutions, and take practical steps toward community transformation. He praised MMU for its strong leadership in championing change and encouraged the administration to follow up on how graduates are applying their skills within their communities.
The symposium was graced by Hon. Harriet Nyakake, Deputy Premier of the Tooro Kingdom, who represented His Majesty Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV. In her remarks, she applauded Roots Africa’s efforts in promoting climate-smart agriculture, creating jobs, and supporting the kingdom’s development. She also called upon young changemakers to continue inspiring their peers through collaboration and shared goals.
As part of the event, student changemakers from Roots Africa partner institutions, including MMU, were awarded certificates of achievement as graduates in recognition of their impactful agriculture projects. Farmer groups, such as the Kazingo Farmers Group, also shared testimonies of how MMU agroecology students have transformed their communities through hands-on training and innovative farming techniques supported by Roots Africa.
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Roselyne Ssali, Dean of Students at MMU, thanked the organisers for selecting MMU as host of the symposium. On behalf of MMU, She presented a special gift, including branded MMU materials, to His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, represented at the event by the Deputy Premier.
The successful symposium restated Mountains of the Moon University’s commitment to promoting innovation, sustainability, and community transformation in partnership with Roots Africa.
