The Faculty of Education at Mountains of the Moon University (MMU), in partnership with the Centre for Wisdom Pedagogy, College of Education and External Studies, Makerere University, conducted a two-day Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) Retooling Training Workshop for Teacher Trainers from 5th to 6th November 2025 at Fort Breeze Hotel, Fort Portal. The workshop aimed at equipping MMU’s teacher trainers with the knowledge and skills required to effectively deliver competence-based education across the university and to serve as key agents of change in Uganda’s evolving higher education landscape.
The training was facilitated by Dr. Farooq Miiro, the Founder and Ag. Coordinator of the Centre for Teaching Thinking Skills and Wisdom Pedagogy at Makerere University, who is also an accomplished educationist, curriculum expert, and researcher with over 15 years of experience in educational reform, curriculum innovation, and assessment.
Opening the workshop, Dr. Muleke Paul, Dean of the Faculty of Education at MMU, emphasized that the Competency-Based Curriculum represents a major shift from rote learning to an approach that values skills, creativity, and lifelong learning. He accentuated MMU’s pride in being at the forefront of educational transformation, explaining that the workshop sought to prepare teacher trainers who can confidently and innovatively facilitate meaningful learning experiences that empower learners to flourish in a rapidly changing world.
Representing the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Outreaches, Prof. John M. Kasenene, who was away on official community engagement, David Katende applauded the Faculty of Education for initiating such a timely engagement, stressing that faculties of education are the engines of transformation within universities. He noted that MMU, which transitioned from a private to a public university in 2022, remains deeply committed to delivering quality education and fostering community engagement in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education.
Throughout the two days, participants explored key themes including competency-based learning and assessment, innovative pedagogies, wisdom pedagogy in 21st-century teaching, philosophical inquiry, and the integration of thinking skills in the curriculum among others. The workshop blended theory and practice, with participants engaging in reflective discussions and hands-on activities designed to model competence-oriented teaching and they were awarded with certicates of participation.
Dr. Miiro emphasized that the future of higher education lies in the ability of universities to reimagine their teaching philosophies, placing learners at the centre of knowledge construction. He urged educators to disengage from traditional, lecture-based methods and adopt active learning strategies that nurture creativity, problem-solving, and ethical reasoning attributes vital to national and global development.
The collaboration between Mountains of the Moon University and Makerere University’s Centre for Wisdom Pedagogy marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s ongoing education reform journey, positioning MMU as a catalyst for change in promoting competence-based and wisdom-driven teaching in higher education.
