Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) made a strong showing at the inaugural Ibanda Open Chess Championship, with its three-member team securing top placements in a competitive field of regional players.
The championship, held recently, at Ibanda University Main Hall, was organized by the Ibanda Community Organization Network (ICON) and attracted chess enthusiasts from institutions across the region.
MMU’s representatives demonstrated impressive skill and strategic prowess, finishing in 4th, 7th, and 12th positions respectively. The tournament served as crucial preparation for the upcoming African Universities and University Sports (AUUS) Games, scheduled for December 18th – 23rd, 2025, at Uganda Christian University.
“This was an excellent opportunity for our players to test their abilities against strong competition, ” commented Roselyn Ssali, Dean of Students at MMU. “Their performance reflects the dedication and talent within our chess program.”
In a gesture of support for the university’s chess development, ICON patron Dr. Patrick Bitature donated 10 chess mats to MMU. The donation was officially presented by Senior Sports Officer Nsubuga Mustapha at the Dean of Students office.
Ssali praised both the chess team and the Sports Unit for their commitment to developing student talent. “Sports and recreational activities play a vital role in fostering intellectual growth and strategic thinking among our students,” she noted.
The strong performance at Ibanda positions MMU’s chess team well as they prepare for the national stage at the AUUS Games, where they will compete against universities from across Uganda and the East African region.
MMU continues to prioritize sports as an integral part of student development, supporting programs that build both athletic excellence and important life skills such as critical thinking, patience, and strategic planning.
