PhD in Agro-Ecological Sciences

The joint Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Agro-ecological Sciences focuses on the study of Agrifood systems in the context of the environmental conservation. The Programme is a PhD by Research. A candidate pursuing doctorate degree Programmes by research receives no structured instruction apart from the cross-cutting courses. Regardless of the broad nature of Agro-ecological sciences, this PhD by research consists of two strands with thematic areas of specialization: Animal Sciences and Aquaculture, Crop Breeding and Biotechnology, Agro-processing, Food Sciences and Nutrition, Biosystems Engineering, Agriculture Economics, Agricultural Extension, Soil Science and agronomy, Natural Resources Management, Biodiversity conservation and wildlife management, Pollution and Waste management, Climate change and Atmospheric studies and Environmental law and policy studies.

Scholarship:

After an applicant’s submission has been considered and a provisional admission has been issued, he/she will be eligible to apply for the potential scholarship scheme managed by MMU/UGent. However, each applicant is encouraged to seek their own funding mechanism since the scholarship slots that may become available at MMU can only accommodate a limited number of students.

PhD Guidelines

A Master’s degree from a recognized University in any of the following fields: Animal Science, Aquaculture, Crop Sciences, Crop Breeding, Biotechnology, Soil Science, Agronomy, Food Sciences, Food Technology, Nutrition, Biosystems Engineering, Agriculture Economics, Agribusiness, Agricultural Extension, Agroecology, Natural Resource Management, Wildlife Studies, Land and Physical resources Management, Water Resources management, Biological sciences, Environmental Science, Physical Sciences, Geography, Science Education and or related.

A research outline (synopsis) of 3-5 pages length (including but not limited to: background, the knowledge gap/problem statement, objectives, scope of study, and the approach/methodology/tools/experimental rig needed) should accompany the application. This will be used to assess the suitability of the applicant for admission simultaneously at MMU and at UGent. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview to validate their suitability for enrollment into the PhD programme.

Ugandan Students

International Students

  1. The Application fee for Ugandans is UGX 200,000 and UGX 350,000 for international students.
  2. Application fees are non-refundable.
  3. Research costs and stays at UGent can either be covered by any available scholarship scheme and or catered for by own funding.
