MMU Claims Sixth Position at AUUS Championships

Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) secured an impressive sixth-place finish at the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) championships held at Uganda Christian University Mukono from December 18-23, 2025.

Competing against 22 universities across the country, MMU demonstrated remarkable prowess across multiple sporting disciplines, walking away with five trophies two gold, one silver, and two bronze in trophies.

The championship saw Ndejje University claim first place, followed by hosts Uganda Christian University in second position, Makerere University third, Kampala International University fourth, and Kampala University fifth, with MMU securing the sixth spot.

MMU’s ladies dominated the pool table events, delivering a clean sweep across all three categories. The team of Karungi Olive Loy, Aluka Hellen Christine, and Namuli Zainabu began their golden run by overcoming Victoria University 2:1 in the semi-finals before defeating Uganda Christian University by the same margin in a thrilling final.

The excellence continued in the doubles event, where Namuli Zainabu and Karungi Olive Loy proved unstoppable, crushing Victoria University 2:0 in the semi-finals and maintaining their perfect form against Makerere University in the final with another 2:0 victory.

In an extraordinary singles competition, MMU guaranteed themselves gold and silver as teammates Namuli Zainabu and Karungi Olive Loy faced off in the final. Namuli emerged victorious to claim gold, while Karungi secured silver. Aluka Hellen Christine finished fourth in the singles event.

The ladies’ scrabble team also clinched gold, with Muzaki Priscilla, Kyomugisha Mariam, Kansiime Juliana Patience, Namara Birungi Judith, and Basemera Moreen demonstrating exceptional wordplay skills throughout the tournament.

MMU’s male scrabble team of Mwito Joseph Kamya, Muhumuza Stephen, Mumbere Kelvin, and Sserunjogi Meddie captured bronze in a competitive field.

In darts competitions, the ladies’ team comprising Kahinju Shamirah, Nalweyiso Mariam, and Katusabe Daphine secured silver, while the men’s team of Santos Rayan, Bright Fortunate, Agaba Clovis, and Namwanja Duncan claimed bronze.

MMU’s sporting ambition extended beyond the medal winning disciplines, with the university fielding competitive teams in woodball, basketball, and athletics.

The basketball team registered a notable victory over Gulu University, demonstrating the growing strength of the program. Meanwhile, both the male and female woodball teams showed promise, advancing to the quarter finals before being eliminated from the competition.

In athletics, MMU was represented by Regan, who competed in the demanding 10,000-metre race, finishing in sixth position and showcasing the university’s commitment to track and field events.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor in Charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. John M. Kasenene, visited the teams at UCU, to congratulate the winners and offer words of encouragement to all participants.

The impressive performance marks a significant milestone for MMU’s sports program and establishes the university as a formidable competitor in national university sports. The institution’s success across multiple disciplines from mind sports like scrabble to precision sports like pool and darts, as well as team sports and athletics demonstrates the well-rounded athletic development at the Fort Portal based university.

As the 2025 year draws to a close, MMU’s athletes return home with their heads held high, having proven that their university can compete at the highest levels of collegiate sports in Uganda across a diverse range of sporting disciplines.
