MMU trains staff on ODeL pedagogy and assessment in the AI era

Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) has held a one-day training for staff on Open, Distance and eLearning (ODeL), under the theme “ODeL Pedagogy and Assessment in the Digital and AI Era.”

The workshop was held on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, at the Main Hall. It brought together academic staff from Faculties, ODeL staff and staff of the Directorate of Quality Assurance. Participants were asked to bring laptops and teaching materials from one of the courses they teach, so the sessions could be hands-on.

Opening the training, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. John M. Kasenene, said ODeL should serve as a tool for learning, not a depository of content. He said Generative AI brings both opportunities and challenges, and that academics should integrate it into their work and guard against its misuse.

Prof. Kasenene told participants that expectations of them as university leaders are high and urged them to practice what they learn, “because practice makes perfect.” He asked them to leave the workshop equipped with practical ways of engaging learners. He added that the university’s Management and Council have welcomed ODeL as a method of learning.

The training was facilitated by Dr. Richard Kajumbula and Ms. Eva Mirembe of the Institute of Open, Distance and eLearning (IODeL) at Makerere University.

Dr. Kajumbula stressed that quality is central to education. He explained that competency-based learning is an approach in which ODeL is the main tool.

The programme covered: constructive alignment in ODeL courses; designing engaging blended and online learning experiences; authentic, competency-based assessment, including rubrics and feedback; and assessment and academic integrity in the Generative AI era, led by Ms. Eva  Mirembe

The workshop was organised by the ODeL team under the Office of the Academic Registrar. It forms part of MMU’s effort to strengthen its capacity to design engaging learning experiences.
