MMU Partners with Dutch SILC Program to Promote Global Learning and Sustainable Development

Mountains of the Moon University (MMU), on 16th April 2025, hosted a one-day international workshop in partnership with the Sustainable International Learning Community (SILC) from the Netherlands. The workshop aimed to cultivate collaboration in the fields of entrepreneurship and agriculture while promoting sustainable development through global academic partnerships.

The workshop brought together students, staff, and several partner organizations, including the Karitas Foundation-Kasese and the Bunyangabu Beekeepers Cooperative. The discussions centered on innovative ways to achieve the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through collaborative educational initiatives.

The partnership, which includes contributions from both local and international institutions, has become a key pillar in mentoring students. Participants shared success stories of students who have benefited from exchange and attachment programs, including placements in institutions such as Bukomansimbi schools, experiences that have helped mold them into responsible citizens.

The workshop also introduced modern teaching methodologies, such as the use of visuals in the classroom, which have been enthusiastically embraced by students and staff as effective tools for enhanced learning.

Leading the initiative, Mr. Clovis Kabaseke, a lecturer and researcher at MMU has played a central role in expanding partnerships to additional Dutch institutions such as CBAB, as well as other local organizations, including those in North Eastern Uganda.

“Our goal is to improve education through global partnerships,” said Mr. Kabaseke. “Programs like SILC align with MMU’s core mission of excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. These collaborations enrich our students’ learning experience and expand their global perspectives.”

Peter Taming, a visiting teacher from Zom College in the Netherlands, praised MMU for its dedication to global citizenship education. “It’s encouraging to see students being supported to think globally while acting locally. I hope they develop a deeper understanding of global issues and contribute to community-based solutions for sustainable development.”

SILC brings together students from various institutions worldwide, fostering teamwork and shared learning with the belief that collaboration drives deeper impact across communities.

Today’s workshop stands as a milestone in MMU’s efforts to strengthen its international footprint while remaining committed to transforming communities through education and partnership.
