Mountains of the Moon University Soil Scientists under the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Science have today trained 35 local farmers from Kinyaibumba village Bwabya Parish Rwengaju Sub-county Kabarole district on fertilizer making, application, better farming methods and general soil management for improved crop yields.
The training focused on equipping farmers with knowledge and skills about Biochar fertilizer making which improves on soil fertility.
The training team (Mr Nyamweha Bruce, Candia Geoffrey) led by Dr. Cosmas Wacal lecturer from the Department of Crop and Animal Production advised farmers to avoid over-cultivation, grazing, bush burning, and proper fertilizer application to avoid soil fertility loss.
Wacal argued farmers to take care of their soils by practicing mulching and recommended fertilizers, and terraces in order to keep nutrients for crop growth.
Mr. Candia assured members about the importance of Biochar fertilizers for productivity and asked them to embrace the best application and usage.
Katutu Molly a farmer explained that the training was so instrumental on better fertilizer application period and Biochar fertilizer making.
Mr. Mande Clovis area Chairperson Applauded the institution for organizing such trainings which equips them with knowledge and skills on Biochar fertilizer making for more harvests.
He requested the University to continue engaging the community for Social Transformation.
Biochar fertilizer is made of rice, coffee husks, and maize cobs. This fertilizer helps to hold soil nutrients from leaching for crop growth and more yields.
