Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) is preparing to host its 3rd International Research Conference from June 25th–26th, 2026, at the University’s Lake Saaka Campus in Fort Portal City, joining together researchers, innovators, policymakers, industry leaders and development partners to explore how research and innovation can drive inclusive growth and sustainable development.
Held under the theme, “Harnessing Research and Innovation to Strengthen Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development,” the conference will provide a platform for sharing knowledge, showcasing innovations and strengthening partnerships that contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation and the achievement of sustainable development goals.
The conference comes at a time when communities across Uganda and the world continue to face complex challenges including climate change, environmental degradation, food insecurity, youth unemployment and limited adoption of innovative technologies. Addressing these challenges requires practical, research-driven solutions that connect academic knowledge with community and industry needs.
As a university whose niche areas focus on agriculture, environmental conservation and tourism, MMU has positioned research and innovation at the centre of its strategic agenda. Through partnerships with government agencies, industry players, development partners and academic institutions, the university continues to promote applied research that generates practical solutions and creates opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.
The upcoming conference is expected to attract about 300 participants drawn from universities, research institutions, government ministries, development organizations, private sector entities, farmer groups, students and community organizations. The gathering will provide opportunities for participants to present research findings, exhibit innovations, exchange experiences and identify collaborative approaches to solving pressing development challenges.
Conference discussions will revolve around eight thematic areas that reflect national and global development priorities. These include sustainable agri-food systems, environmental sustainability and climate action, tourism and cultural industries, digital transformation and emerging technologies, business and financial innovations, education innovations, governance and social inclusion, as well as healthcare innovations and social protection.
Organizers note that the conference will particularly emphasize translating research outputs into practical innovations and commercial products that can contribute to economic growth, job creation and community transformation. This aligns with MMU’s commitment to promoting innovative and transformative education, research and community engagement.
The conference will also feature innovation exhibitions where researchers, students and industry actors will showcase technologies, products and solutions developed through research. The exhibitions are expected to demonstrate the growing role of innovation in addressing challenges facing communities, industries and public institutions.
The event will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing both physical and virtual participation to enable wider engagement from national and international stakeholders. Participants will have the opportunity to attend keynote presentations, scientific paper sessions, panel discussions and networking engagements designed to foster partnerships and knowledge exchange.
The conference has undergone a comprehensive review process to ensure alignment with MMU’s strategic research objectives and Uganda’s national development priorities. While initial plans sought to leverage collaborations around Competence-Based Education initiatives, the conference has since been refined to focus more broadly on research and innovation as drivers of sustainable development and inclusive growth.
According to the conference programme, participants will arrive on June 24, followed by the official opening ceremony, keynote addresses and thematic presentations on June 25. Scientific paper presentations, innovation exhibitions and the closing ceremony will take place on June 26, while a networking and excursion programme is scheduled for June 27.
The conference is expected to produce a book of abstracts, conference proceedings, scientific papers, posters and policy-relevant recommendations that can inform decision-making and support sustainable development initiatives in Uganda and beyond.
As preparations enter the final stages, MMU has called upon researchers, innovators and development practitioners to participate in the conference and contribute to advancing knowledge and innovation for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
