MMU REPRESENTATIVES JOIN INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY VISIT TO EUROPE UNDER ODEL-UG PROJECT

Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) recently participated in an international mobility visit to two leading European universities as part of the Erasmus+ funded ODeL-UG project, “Enhancing Access and Quality of the Higher Education Landscape in Uganda through Open Distance e-Learning.”

MMU was represented by Robert Tuhaise, Principal eLearning Administrator, and Babirye Nanteza Lucy, Senior Programme Coordinator for ODeL, who joined fellow representatives from other Ugandan consortium member institutions in visits to the University of Lisbon, Portugal, and Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

The ODeL-UG project is funded by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) under the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) grant scheme. The project consortium brings together a blend of Ugandan and European institutions, comprising the Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU), the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), Kabale University, Mountains of the Moon University, Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal), and Universiteit Maastricht (Netherlands).

The project’s overarching goal is to transform and strengthen Uganda’s Open Distance e-Learning ecosystem, with specific objectives that include developing a National Quality Assurance Framework for ODeL programmes, strengthening institutional capacity in curriculum development, teaching, and learning, improving ICT infrastructure and technological resources for ODeL delivery, and fostering knowledge exchange between Ugandan and European institutions.

The Ugandan project representatives visited the University of Lisbon from 26th to 29th May 2026, before proceeding to Maastricht University from 1st to 5th June 2026. The visits were structured as a combination of workshops, lectures, site visits, and exchange of experiences and good practices in quality assurance in higher education, as well as online and distance teaching and learning.

During the engagements, the team held discussions with experts from both institutions on their respective ODeL frameworks and pedagogical models, the regulatory and policy environment governing distance education, curriculum development approaches, and the digital infrastructure that supports ODeL delivery.

The international mobility visits represent a significant milestone in MMU’s commitment to expanding access to quality higher education through innovative and technology driven approaches. By engaging directly with established European institutions renowned for their expertise in open and distance learning, MMU’s representatives returned with valuable insights and practical experiences that will inform the university’s growing ODeL agenda.
