The Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) Convocation has established a seven-member Electoral Commission to oversee the organisation and conduct of elections for the first Convocation Executive Committee.
The Electoral Commission was elected during a General Assembly held on Saturday, 19 September 2026, at the Lake Saaka Campus, convening together alumni and members of staff to advance the institutionalisation of the University’s Convocation.
The newly established Commission comprises Kibira Derrick as Chairperson, Kobusinge Marion as Vice Chairperson, Businge Jacob as Treasurer, Alinaitwe Brian as Secretary, Mujurizi Laban as Commissioner for Undergraduates, Kaboyo Davis as Commissioner for Undergraduates, and Musinguzi Daniel as Commissioner for Postgraduates.
The elected members were subsequently sworn into office in a ceremony led by Commissioner of Oaths Council Robert Mugabe, formally marking the beginning of their mandate.
The General Assembly marked another important step in the establishment of the MMU Convocation, following the adoption of the Convocation Constitution at an Alumni General Assembly held at Lake Saaka Campus on 16 May 2026. The Constitution was subsequently presented to the University Council, which noted it during its 16th sitting held on 18–19 June 2026, under Minute 259/16th/MMU UC/June/2026.
Addressing the Assembly, the outgoing Interim Convocation Chairperson, Businge K. Bob, reflected on the journey towards establishing a functional and representative Convocation. He highlighted the work of the interim committee in consultations, drafting and stakeholder engagement that culminated in the adoption of the Constitution.
He noted that establishing the Electoral Commission was the next critical step towards operationalising the Constitution and facilitating the election of the first Convocation Executive.
In her closing remarks, MMU Academic Registrar Grace K. Nyakahuma commended the outgoing interim committee for its commitment to establishing the Convocation and emphasised the important role alumni play in the University’s development.
She also expressed appreciation to the Top University Management for the support rendered towards the progress and establishment of the MMU Convocation, noting that the journey had benefited from the cooperation of the University leadership and other stakeholders. She further urged members to support the newly established Commission as it develops the electoral roadmap and undertakes subsequent stages of the electoral process.
The establishment of the Electoral Commission marks a new phase in MMU’s efforts to build a functional Convocation that joins together the University’s alumni and provides a structured platform for them to contribute to the growth and development of the institution and the wider community.
The newly elected Commission is now expected to take charge of the electoral process leading to the election of the first MMU Convocation Executive Committee.
