Mountains of the Moon University is hosting the African Girls can code Initiative (AGCCI) Camp from 16th to 25th June 2025 at Lake Saaka Campus in a training that is aimed at equipping Girls in mid-western Region with ICT skills.
Dr.Edwin Akugizibwe the Dean Faculty of Science Technology and Innovations at Mountains of the Moon University, explained that the training is having 60 Participants who were carefully selected from Advanced Levels in Secondary and Tertiary institutions.
“The 60 participants were properly selected from A-level girls (50) and MMU (10) that include 5 Bachelor of Computer Science/BIT students, 1 is a former MMU student with a Certificate in ICT and 4 are from MMU’s partner institute, Bridge Institute of Information Technology.”
Ms Janat Winner from UN women explained that the Chapter is prioritizing ICT training in Education in institutions with an aim to empower the girl student, enhance her learning, and prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age. She appreciated the Leadership of Mountains of the Moon University for accepting to host such an insightful Camp.
“We are hopeful that this Training will help the Girls in personalized learning, Development of the 21st Century skills, Digital Literacy and adaptability and Innovations,” she noted.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration (DVC FA) Prof. Edmond Kagambe noted that MMU is committed to supporting the mandate of UN women as stipulated in the United Nations General Assembly resolution 64/289 and UN Women’s Strategic Plan that focuses on advancing Community outreach in STEM education and digital skills development for girls.
Prof Kagambe appreciated the organizers for supporting the government of Uganda initiative in develping the digital age through the implementation of the Uganda’s National ICT Policy, developed in 2014, which aims at leveraging ICT for the country’s socioeconomic development. He noted that the policy seeks to create a conducive environment for achieving a modern and prosperous Uganda by 2040, focusing on infrastructure, service utilization, research, and innovation.
“The Integration of ICT in the Student’s Learning is crucial for enhancing student engagement, improving learning outcomes, and preparing students for a technology-driven world. ICT training for students also fosters digital literacy, enabling them to adapt to evolving technological advancements and create more dynamic and interactive learning environments,” he explained.
The 60 girls that are undertaking training fall into the age bracket of 17 to 25.
