A mammoth of sports activity hovers over MMU

An adage that states that work without play makes Jack a dull boy is fading away from the face of Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) with several sports activities that have been organized in the last two weeks. The University campus remains buzzing with students’ excitement and geared up as an announcement for a sports activity is announced.

MMU athletes recently participated in the national cross country championship in Tororo district that was graced with top athletes in the country as Jacob Kiplimo among others. This gives students’ exposure and confidence to run at bigger stages. MMU was represented by 6 students who ably put the University’s name high.

Without mincing a word, MMU recently participated in the Uganda Pentecostal University (UPU) Prof. John Ntambirweki memorial tournament where MMU emerged victorious in volleyball as they triumphed over the hosts UPU and came second in netball.

In the same way, the Sports Unit also successfully organized a 15th Graduation tournament that took place on 22nd February 2024 at different fields of Katojo Prisons Playground, Saaka Playground, and Muhooti Barracks playground.  Volleyball, Football, and Netball were played including Uganda People’s Deference Forces (UPDF), Home Bliss Hotel, Uganda Pentecostal University (UPU), Ibanda University, Finns Medical University, Wazeyi Volley Ball Club, Mubende Army Secondary School, Fort-Portal Secondary School among many other institutions.

The Inter-faculty marathon that occurred on Wednesday, February 28th, 2024 brought together a total of 45 student-athletes who participated in the 7km race for males and 3.5km for females. The best participants were Mugisa Reagan, and Ivan Tumwesigye in the males and Tukundane Rosemary in the females.

Yesterday February 29th, 2024, an Inter-faculty darts competition took place at the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment Sciences where the Faculty of Education came out as the winner of the tournament with 30 points, followed by the Faculty of Health Sciences with 25 points, 3rd was Faculty of Agriculture and Environment Sciences, 4th was Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, 5th was Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and 6th was Faculty of Science, Technology and Innovation. 

MMU Senior Sports Officer Mustafa Nsubuga says there are several upcoming sports activities which include: Inter-faculty games that will include Football, Volleyball, Athletics, Netball, and Darts to be played at Katojo and Saaka Playgrounds tomorrow 2rd March 2024 starting at 9 am to 6 pm. There will also be friendly football and volleyball matches between MMU and Metropolitan International University to be played on 6th March 2024 starting at 2 pm. There is a plan by the sports unit to have a staff vs student tournament in both football and volleyball yet to be announced.
