MMU Launches First PhD programme in Agroecological Sciences

Mountains of the Moon University in collaboration with Ghent University on June 25th 2025 launched a PhD programme in Agroecological Sciences.

This is the first PhD programme at Mountains of the Moon University and it follows a recent accreditation from National Council for Higher Education.

The launching was held at the University’s main campus, and it was graced by the University Chancellor, Professor. Edward.B. Rugumayo, who officially unveiled the course outlines, guidelines, duration, and scholarship procedures.

Professor Joshua Wessana, the Dean Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Science, also presented the PhD outlines and said the process of having a PhD at MMU started way back in 2017. He commended the University Management and key staff departments for their contribution towards achieving this level of academic progress.

Professor Wessana said the course is centred on research and innovation, and it is aimed at providing solutions to environmental challenges in the Rwenzori region and beyond.

Professor Moses Muhumuza a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Science said the program will also provide solutions to climate change, global warming and sustainable agriculture.

Additionally,  Prof.Muhumuza revealed that the academic programme will take 5 years of study with seven core course units which will include Literature Review, Research Proposal Development, Computer Application, Scholarly writing, Institution pedagogy and Research Methodology.

Professor John M. Kasenene, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, said the PhD is a historical achievement for MMU and it is aimed at propelling academic excellence in teaching, training, and research.

He said the course will scientifically integrate knowledge in biological Environment and Agriculture and will build capacity in solving environmental conservation challenges globally.

Professor Kasenene also stated that the course will focus on Increased food productivity, mechanization with an aim of conserving the environment.

The Vice Chancellor Mountains of the Moon University, Professor Pius Coxwell Achanga, said the Genesis of initiating a PhD programme is a testament for fulfilling academic excellence through research and innovation.

Professor Achanga reaffirmed to the congregation the University’s readiness to teach a PhD program in Agroecology, citing adequate and qualified staff and asked members to keep the candle burning.

It should be noted that Candidates of this course will both conduct research in Uganda and Belgium and will benefit from joint research supervision and access to facilities and resources to expand knowledge and skills for sustainable Development.
