Programme Background
The joint Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Agro-ecological Sciences focuses on the study of Agrifood systems in the context of environmental conservation. The Programme is a PhD by Research. A candidate pursuing a doctorate degree Programme by research receives no structured instruction apart from the cross-cutting courses. Regardless of the broad nature of Agro-ecological sciences, this PhD by research consists of two strands with thematic areas of specialization: Animal Sciences and Aquaculture, Crop Breeding and Biotechnology, Agro-processing, Food Sciences and Nutrition, Biosystems Engineering, Agriculture Economics, Agricultural Extension, Soil Science and agronomy, Natural Resources Management, Biodiversity conservation and wildlife management, Pollution and Waste management, Climate change and Atmospheric studies and Environmental law and policy studies.
The programme will jointly be implemented by Mountains of the Moon University (Uganda) and Ghent University (Belgium). Every student is expected to spend a minimum of six months either in one go or staggered at Ghent University depending on the nature and needs of the research undertaken to qualify for the Joint PhD degree. Upon completion of the programme, the candidate will be awarded a joint degree referred to as PhD in Agro-ecological Sciences (with a mention of the specialization/strand undertaken) at Mountains of Moon University and also known as PhD in Biosciences Engineering (with a mention of the specialization/strand undertaken) at Ghent University.
The PhD in Agro-ecological Sciences is structured in 1+3 model. This means the first year is spent at MMU where the PhD candidate undertakes mandatory cross-cutting courses that are facilitated by experts both at MMU and UGent and develop the research proposal with joint supervision of professors at MMU and UGent. After the first year, a decision will be made, on whether the PhD candidate can continue to the subsequent year or not in line with the Doctoral Training Guidelines at MMU and UGent. Upon approval at the end of the first year, the PhD candidate will be eligible to commence planned academic stays at UGent on the advice of the supervisors. For the entire PhD, a candidate must stay at UGent for a minimum of six months to qualify for the Joint PhD degree award.
