Enhancing Campus Safety: SP Dick Banya Appointed as Head of Security at MMU

Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) has strengthened its security leadership with the appointment of Superintendent of Police (SP) Dick Banya as the new Head of Security. In a formal ceremony held yesterday at the University’s main campus in Fort Portal, SP Banya was warmly received by the institution’s top management.

The day began with an initial welcome by the University Secretary, Mr. Gregory Tweheyo, who facilitated SP Banya’s introduction to the University’s administrative structure. Following this, SP Banya held strategic meetings with Vice Chancellor Prof. Pius Coxwell Achanga and Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs Prof. John M. Kasenene.

“Security is paramount for any institution of higher learning,” stated Vice Chancellor Prof. Achanga during the welcome ceremony. “SP Banya brings a wealth of experience that will undoubtedly enhance our university’s safety protocols and ensure a secure environment for our academic community.”

SP Banya, speaking after assuming his new role, expressed his commitment to elevating the University’s security standards. “Mountains of the Moon University is a prestigious institution with unique security needs given its expanding infrastructure and growing student population,” he remarked. “My priority is to implement a comprehensive security framework that aligns with the University’s vision while ensuring the safety of all stakeholders.” He outlined his initial plans, which include conducting a thorough security assessment, enhancing collaboration with local law enforcement, and implementing modern security protocols across all University facilities. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kasenene emphasized the importance of security in maintaining a conducive academic environment. “With SP Banya’s expertise, we are confident in our ability to provide a safe and secure environment that supports our academic excellence,” he stated.

The new Head of Security’s appointment comes as part of MMU’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its institutional capacity and ensure world-class standards across all operations. SP Banya will oversee all security operations, including day-to-day campus security, event security, and emergency response protocols.

Prior to his appointment, SP Banya served in various high-level security positions within the Uganda Police Force, bringing valuable experience in institutional security management to his new role at MMU.
