The Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) Prof. Edmond Kagambe has called upon Deans and Heads of Departments (HODs) to improve on their content knowledge and focus on transformative learning.
During an orientation workshop for Deans and HODs that was organized at Lisieux Center, Nyabukara in Fort Portal City where the newly appointed Deans and HODs for the Institution were being inducted into their new roles and responsibilities, Prof. Kagambe emphasized on transformative learning as a strategy for realizing the University’s Vision of “being a Center of Excellence in Teaching, Research and Community Engagement for Sustainable Development”.
“Transformative Education involves the provision of teaching and learning experience, geared towards motivating and empowering learners into developing the capability to make informed decisions and actions at the individual, community and Global levels. It promotes the application of critical thinking skills in Learning generally,” he remarked.
He noted that for MMU to adopt the transformative approach for Education, the HODs and Deans have to be prepared in improving the content pedagogical knowledge by creating an enabling environment for the learners, providing modeling and mastery experiences and creating experiential lessons.
According to the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academics Prof.John. M. Kasenene, at the heart of this Educational transformation lies the curriculum. He said that the curriculum serves as a critical foundation for shaping educational objectives and the associated course content.
“The transformative curriculum needs to include the attributes of; curriculum models, objective outcome creation, scaffolding of curriculum, curriculum mapping, linkage of assessment to objectives and objectives to programme outcomes, program evaluation and strategies for the curriculum design including technology,” he elaborated.
Dr. Musinguzi S.Peter one of the key note speakers at the event Transformative learning is an educational approach that encourages profound, meaningful changes in how individuals perceive themselves, others, and the world around them.
“Transformative learning promotes understanding of diverse perspectives and cultures, inspires actions that contribute to social justice and equity and prepares individuals to address global challenges like climate change, inequality, or systemic discrimination,” he said.
The academic Registrar Mrs. Grace K. Nyakahuma congratulated the Deans and HODs upon their new roles and also took them through the major University policies that they needed to take caution of.
A total of six Deans were inducted along with 15 HODs and 6 Senior Assistant Academic Registrars.
