642 students graduate, Prof. Rugumayo installed as Chancellor during MMU’s 15th Graduation Ceremony

Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) proudly celebrated its 15th graduation ceremony on, Friday 23rd February 2024, marking a significant milestone in its journey as a prominent institution committed to fostering inclusive education in key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and the environment for sustainable solutions in national development.

The Chief Guest was the President of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who was represented by the Vice-President Rtd. Major Jessica Alupo who also performed the role of installed the Chancellor of MMU, Prof. Edward B. Rugumayo. The President under Section 26(1) of the Universities and Other Institutions Act 2001 (UOTIA) as amended provides that the President is a Visitor of each Public University.  The UOTIA 2001 as amended under section 30(1) further provides for a Chancellor for each Public University, Section 30(3) specifies the role of the Chancellor who is the titular head of the University and as such presides at all ceremonial assemblies of the University and, in the name of that University, confer degrees and other academic titles and distinctions of that University.

The Minister of Education Mrs. Janet Museveni was represented by Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, Minister for Primary Education, who applauded the University for its steady growth since being taken over by the government and committed to continually supporting the University in its growth endeavors. 

A total of 642 (305 females and 337 males) graduates were honored during the ceremony, representing a diverse group of individuals equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the nation as a whole. This graduation also marked the University’s second graduation as a public institution, following its transition from a private university.

This year’s graduation theme was “Inclusive Education in Agriculture, Tourism, and the Environment for Sustainable Solutions in National Development,” the graduation ceremony highlighted the University’s commitment to providing quality education that addresses the pressing challenges facing our society today. By focusing on these key sectors, Mountains of the Moon University aims to equip its graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to drive sustainable development and make a meaningful impact in their communities.

In line with the theme of inclusive education, the University on Thursday 22nd February 2024 organized a unique procession dubbed “MMU promotes a Kavera free Tourism City,” as part of the graduation festivities. MMU students, staff and other entities such as the Ministry of Water, ABSA Bank, JESE, and others joined hands in cleaning Fort Portal City, underscoring the institution’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. This symbolic act sought to highlight the importance of collective action in building sustainable solutions for the betterment of society.

The 15th MMU graduation ceremony served as a testament to the University’s unwavering commitment to providing quality education and cultivating a spirit of innovation among its students. As Mountains of the Moon University looks towards the future, it remains dedicated to advancing inclusive education and fostering sustainable solutions for the benefit of all.
