Nurturing Literary Talent: MMU Student Poet Breaks New Ground

When one speaks of poetry, many don’t really make sense of the word narrative. However, Latif, a 3rd-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with Education at Mountains of the Moon University (MMU), has not only mastered the art of poetry but is now taking it to the next level with his new book, “A Session in Therapy.”

Latif’s journey as a poet began in the halls of MMU, where he found inspiration in the university’s vibrant literary community. His unique approach to narrative poetry has caught the attention of both peers and faculty, marking him as a rising star in Uganda’s literary scene.

“A Session in Therapy” is Latif’s debut collection, showcasing a mature voice that belies his young age. The book weaves together themes of personal growth, societal challenges, and the human experience, all through the lens of poetic narrative.

Recognizing the exceptional quality of Latif’s work, Mountains of the Moon University has decided to procure 50 copies of “A Session in Therapy” at a cost of 30,000 Uganda Shillings each. This move not only supports a talented student but also enriches the university’s library with locally produced literature.

Prof. Pius C. Achanga, Vice Chancellor at MMU, while being handed a copy of the book at Nyaika Hotel, Fort Portal during a Student leadership dinner recently commented on the university’s decision: “We are immensely proud of Latif’s achievement. By supporting his work, we’re not just investing in one student’s future, but also setting an example of how universities can nurture and promote homegrown talent.”

The impact of Latif’s poetry extends far beyond the confines of MMU. Several other institutions across Uganda have also expressed interest in acquiring copies of “A Session in Therapy” for their libraries and literature programs. This widespread recognition speaks volumes about the universal appeal and quality of Latif’s work.

Latif’s success story is already inspiring other students at MMU and beyond. The university activities involving the Dean of Students Office and Vice Chancellor’s office always invite Latif as a key participant, to encourage more students to explore their literary talents.

“I never imagined my words would resonate with so many people,” Latif said in a recent interview. “The support from MMU and the wider community has been overwhelming. It’s a dream come true to see my poetry in print, and I hope it inspires others to share their stories through verse.”

As Latif continues to hone his craft at MMU, his journey serves as a testament to the university’s commitment to fostering creativity and supporting student initiatives. With talents like Latif emerging from its programs, Mountains of the Moon University is playing a crucial role in shaping the future of Ugandan literature.

The success of “A Session in Therapy” is just the beginning. As more institutions recognize the value of nurturing young literary talents, we can look forward to a rich and diverse landscape of Ugandan poetry in the years to come.
